Explore how Microsoft Copilot can help teachers spend less time writing reports and more time focusing on pupils.

Teacher workload remains one of the biggest challenges that schools face, with report-writing often said to be one of the most time-consuming administrative tasks. It’s an essential part of a teacher's role, but it can also require many hours of repetition from writing to editing and refinement.

Schools are exploring how tools such as Microsoft Copilot can support everyday tasks without compromising on professional judgement. Rather than replacing teachers, Copilot acts as an assistant to streamline tasks rather than take over.Read on to explore how Microsoft Copilot can help teachers spend less time writing reports and more time focusing on pupils, with a real example from our work with Barnes Primary School.

Barnes Primary School: Microsoft elevate funded training

Recently, TA Education worked with Barnes Primary School to demonstrate how Microsoft Copilot can be used to support report-writing as part of a wider programme of AI training for school leaders, teachers, and administrative staff.

Five sessions were successfully delivered at Barnes Primary School on 19 May 2026; a community primary school based in the London Borough of Richmond.

The content for the day was as follows:

After the training, we reviewed the next steps and implementation of Copilot within the school.

What Barnes Primary Thought

"We thought the session was excellent and has given us lots to think about and go away and explore. We are very grateful to Rachel for delivering such a great day of training."

Feedback like this highlights the importance of giving schools both an introduction to AI, and the confidence to explore how tools can support teaching and administration without acting as a replacement for professionals.

Training gives staff the opportunity to understand where AI can genuinely save time without compromising quality.

Why report writing is an ideal use case for microsoft copilot

Many school reports follow similar structures and require teachers to communicate things like progress, strengths, and more.

This makes report-writing an excellent candidate for AI-assisted drafting.

Microsoft Copilot can support teachers throughout the writing process as it helps to generate drafts, suggest alternative wording, improve clarity, and maintain a consistent tone across reports. It can also reduce the time spent rewriting repetitive comments, so that teachers can focus on refining and personalising feedback for individual pupils.

The main benefit, however, is that teachers remain in control of every report. Building a custom agent that is instructed to behave in the way you want it to, and using only the source material that you stipulate, means you can use Copilot in a bespoke way that is designed to assist with drafting and editing, not to replace professional judgement.

If used thoughtfully and strategically, Copilot becomes a tool that reduces administrative burden and supports the quality and personalisation of written reports.
