Free STEM Workshops and 3D Printing Competition

TA has teamed up with Craftbot and the RAF Youth & STEM Team to provide 4 Secondary Schools with the chance to participate in a 3D printing challenge and win a Craftbot Plus Pro 3D Printer Bundle (worth £1,600).

We are searching for enthusiastic and open-minded teachers, looking to inspire their students with the world of STEM and 3D printing.

Any Independent or State Secondary School in England or Wales can apply to take part in a STEM Challenge designed in partnership with the Royal Air Force. Four lucky schools will be chosen to host a STEM Workshop Day for students, delivered by TA STEM Specialists and RAF STEM Ambassadors

The workshop day will introduce a 3D design and print challenge for students, and the selected schools will get to hold onto a 3D printer until the end of the Summer Term, giving you the opportunity to provide all your students with the chance to enter the challenge.

Free 3D Printing workshops for students, free teacher training, the use of a free 3D printer for 4 weeks, and a 1 in 4 chance to win a 3D printer for your school. What’s not to like?

How the Competition Works

  1. Follow the ‘How to enter instructions below’ (It only takes a few minutes to enter!).
  2. The 4 successful schools will be informed by 3pm on the 21st May 2021.
  3. TA will make contact with the successful schools to arrange the STEM workshop day (see details below).
  4. Following your free workshop day, the printer will be left with your school until the 15th July.
    During this time you are encouraged to involve as many students as possible to create a 3D model to enter into the competition.
  5. When the printer is collected, we would like to see all the designs produced, and would like you to nominate up to 5 designs to be entered for judging by Royal Air Force Engineers and Craftbot.
  6. The 5 designs from each school will be judged on the 30th July 2021 and all 4 schools will be informed of the outcome on the same day.
  7. The winning school will receive their free printer to keep ready for the start of the new academic year.

The Workshop Day

Experienced TA STEM Educators* will work with you to plan and deliver your workshop day with support from RAF STEM Ambassadors. The format and timings for the day are flexible but we expect the workshop days to include:

  • Start of the day: TA arrive on-site and install the printer before showing a member of staff (IT, TA, or teacher) basic troubleshooting tips and general maintenance requirements.**
     
  • Teacher Training: When appropriate (possibly after school) a short 1-hour training session is delivered to any teaching staff wanting to know how to use the 3D printer and 3D design software.
     
  • Student Workshops: Throughout the day, our STEM Educators will run 1-hour workshops with as many students as possible to start producing your competition entries. This will also allow teaching staff to observe and repeat the lesson for the next few weeks.

  • Capturing Your Day: Two of the four winning schools will also play host to our two-man film crew looking to capture your workshop day on video.

*Former teachers or educators with enhanced DBS checks and many years of experience delivering student workshops.
**Remote support will be available for the period the printer is with the school.

How to Enter

To nominate your school simply provide the details below by 3pm on the 20th May 2021.

  3. Tell us in fewer than 100 words how your school would embed 3D printing into teaching and learning

Terms and Conditions

  1. The programme and competition are open to any Secondary School in England or Wales, State or Independent.
  2. The 4 schools will be selected based on the response provided.
    No feedback will be provided to unsuccessful schools.
  3. The final decision for all stages of the competition remains with Craftbot.
  4. The workshop day must be delivered on-site before the 18th June.
  5. The workshop day must involve participation from a minimum of 3 staff and 40 students (2 classes, any age).
  6. We will be looking to capture the workshops on film to create promotional videos that will be released online.
    The selected schools will be responsible for ensuring students have permission to be filmed and be willing to participate in the videos on the day.
  7. Competition designs will not be returned to the school unless specifically requested in writing.
